Dice are the way we add the force of chance into our games. In fact with out this force many games would not be fun at all. It’s only by not knowing what the outcome is going to be at each part of our turn that we can be frustrated, elated or distraught through the game. In maths, this force is modelled using the concept of probability and understanding that can help you win some of the dice games out there. Dice, as the bringers of chance, have been used all over the world for hundreds of years in as many different forms as you can imagine. Today the classic example of a dice would be a six faced cube with each face showing a different number of pips from 1 to 6. We are bringing you some examples of a few games and challenges that will help you explore, ask questions and make observations about dice and the games we play with them.
You don’t even need to own dice (though I imagine there are few people who don’t own at least a couple of pairs of dice, even if they are hidden in various game boxes around your home). There are apps and websites that will allow you to play with dice too. Here are a couple that we use:
